A Security Guard in New York State is employed to perform specific duties related to the protection and safety of individuals and property, but not as a private investigator. Their key responsibilities include:
• Protecting persons and/or property from harm, theft, or unlawful activity
• Deterring, observing, detecting, and reporting unlawful or unauthorized actions
• Providing street patrol services
• Responding to security system alarms (excluding installation or service)
Licensees are responsible for understanding the regulations under the Private Investigators, Bail Enforcement Agents, Watch, Guard or Patrol Agencies, and Security Guards License Law.
Registration term: 2 years.

Submit a Completed Application: Submit your application and the required fee to the Department of State.
Age Requirement: You must be 18 years or older to apply.
Fingerprinting: Proof of fingerprint completion is required.
Criminal Background: You must not have been convicted of a serious criminal offense.
NYS Photo ID: A current NYS photo driver’s license or non-driver ID card is required.
Complete Training: Complete the required training program.

As a prospective Security Guard in NYS, you must complete training and pay the required fees. Here’s an overview of the fees associated with your registration:
$36 – Initial Application: Payable to the Department of State
$25 – Renewal Fee: For renewing your registration after two years
$101.75 – Fingerprint Fee: Payable to IDEMIA
$25 – Employment Status Notification
$0 – Change of Personal Name and/or Address
$25 – Duplicate License/Registration Request
$25 – Change of Status Fee
Note: You may pay these fees by check or money order made payable to the Department of State or by MasterCard or Visa using a credit card authorization form. DO NOT SEND CASH. Application fees are non-refundable. A $20 fee will be charged for any returned checks.
